Having done it often in my life I tend to forget how many people don’t. Which is I guess a way to keep my life full of surprises. What do yo mean you haven’t gone on sabbatical/taken a pilgrimage/done a retreat/hiked in the wilderness/lived in silence for a week/volunteered for more than one day/traveled to a different country? You haven’t ever been to the alternate coast? You haven’t been out of your own state? Wonderful!!! There is so much life to explore and experience. I can’t wait to hear all about your adventures!
Life is for living, not something that happens to you like a downpour in a cold wind. While it’s good to be prepared and it’s great to be in shape and ready to go, nothing should keep you from experiencing the world. Especially not the prepackaged culture that we are fed now. What we are taught about the world and how to live in it is a thimble full of what is really out there. Don’t wait for what is yours, go out and find it. Find something that is completely different from anything you have ever heard about or experienced and talk to someone about it or go watch it happening. See if it is for you. Goto a local independent neighborhood coffee shop and just sit and watch people. Strike up a conversation. Find out what people are doing and thinking. You’ll be amazed at how different it is from you and how wonderful.
Different can be scary, frustrating, aggravating, and nerve-wracking, but it can also just be new and not yet experienced. And once you have met it and learned a bit about it, it could change into familiar and fun. You won’t know until you try. Be open to the possibilities because fun is out there. And who among us can say they have enough fun in their lives?
